Renowned for its abundant wildlife, the Okavango Delta and the areas surrounding &Beyond Xudum Delta Lodge are home to a large number of species making for an exhilarating Botswana safari. The area is home to an assortment of species adapted to the semi-aquatic lifestyle, such as the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga. Lion prides, cheetah, leopard and African wild dog are occasionally encountered, while families of hippo hide in the deeper channels and lagoons that are fed by seasonal rains. The area supports the continent’s largest surviving concentration of elephant and buffalo, while roan and sable antelope are occasionally spotted in the open woodlands.

Although predominantly nocturnal and difficult to spot, leopards occur throughout the Okavango, particularly in dense riverine forest. Apart from the more commonly encountered predators, the Okavango is also a stronghold for the endangered African wild dog, although sightings of this rare animal are relatively uncommon.

Exhibiting a fascinating social structure, wild dog live in packs led by dominant pairs, with a strict social hierarchy.

One of the most common antelope in the Okavango, the red lechwe is especially adapted for the swampy conditions. Its splayed, elongated hooves give it a sure footing in muddy conditions.
With an incredible wealth of species, the Okavango is also a haven for birding enthusiasts. One of its most sought after species is the huge but elusive Pel’s fishing owl, which roosts in the densest evergreen thickets. A quintessential African sound, the iconic call of the fish eagle can often be heard echoing over the Delta.

Six rhino were recently donated to Botswana through the &Beyond Rhinos Without Borders project. They have made their home in the area.

Childminders: Childminders are available but must be booked on the day of arrival. A rate of USD 5 per hour is payable at the lodge.
Whilst there are age restrictions for children permitted on game viewing activities, all ages will be accommodated on game drive and boat transfers to-and-from the lodge.

If paying for a Private Vehicle, children of any age may go on game drive, with access to sightings being at the discretion of the guide, based on the behaviour of both child and animals. Greater distances to animals may be adhered to, or certain sightings may be avoided, in order to ensure the safety of all. In the case of boating activities, the availability of boats may restrict private use and require forward planning.

Tsodilo Hills Half Day Trip

  • Guests travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tsodilo Hills, set inGuests travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Tsodilo Hills, set inthe midst of the Kalahari Desert, by helicopter. They will hike up thecraggy hillside with a San guide to view some of the area’s 4 500 rockpaintings, which date back 26 000 years. Considered sacred by the San,evidence of human activity on the hills goes back 100 000 years.

 Village Tours

  • This helicopter trip to some of the most remote villages in the Okavango Delta offers guests insight into a way of life that has changed very little over the generations. Following a scenic flight, a local guide will explain aspects of local life that include architecture, religious beliefs and traditional manners of hunting and fishing. Guests will also enjoy the opportunity to meet local craftspeople.

Okavango Horseback Safari
