The idyllic heart of the Okavango Delta

Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) lies on the aptly named Paradise Island, surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation within a remote area of the productive Moremi Game Reserve. For much of the year this magnificent area epitomises the permanently flooded section of the Okavango Delta, with palm-filled islands, riverine forests, a multitude of clear water channels and expansive floodplains.
There are nine raised luxury tents with en-suite facilities, an outdoor shower – and superb views of the classic Okavango Delta floodplains that surround the camp. Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, bar and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For those hot days there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off.

Highlights

  • This true wetland paradise is a delight for birdwatchers and lovers of tranquil beauty
  • The best place in the Delta to see the elusive sitatunga antelope
  • Learn about the fascinating formation of the incredible Okavango Delta

There is no better way of viewing game and capturing the essence of the Okavango than by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). The Okavango-born guide and poler will reveal the wiles and secrets of living in the Delta while you spot tiny frogs and colourful waterbirds. *This activity is water-level dependant.

Boating*

Water-level dependent, boating is another idyllic form of viewing water-based wildlife. Hippo and crocodile are often seen on these adventures, and sometimes even the elusive sitatunga. *This activity is water-level dependant.

Nature Walks

Short walks are possible around the islands whilst out in the boat or on mokoro excursions. This may be your chance to spot that Pel’s fishing-owl as well as other water-loving wildlife.

Fishing

Fishing with a limited supply of basic equipment is on offer seasonally on a catch-and-release basis. Please note that fishing takes place in waters outside of the Moremi since fishing is not allowed within the Game Reserve.

Xigera is a true water camp: This is the land of the sitatunga antelope and Pel's fishing-owl. Waterbirds are seen in large numbers including rufous-bellied heron and the secretive white-backed night-heron. Other special birds are greater swamp-warbler, coppery-tailed coucal and Luapula cisticola brown firefinch, swamp boubou, Hartlaub's babbler and western banded snake-eagle. One may be surprised by the presence of lion, leopard, hyaena and buffalo as they wade and swim between islands in search of food.
