Dates

2017: This itinerary works throughout the year.

Itinerary

As you can imagine this is quite the list and your consultant will be more than happy to email you through a more comprehensive itinerary but for now we want to outline the route and the highlights along the way

  • Hidden Item +

  • Day 1-3 Victoria Falls
    +

Spending the first couple of days in Vic Falls allows you to relax after your journey and acclimatize while visiting one of the seven natural wonders on the world. There is plenty to do in Vic Falls from the more extreme (white water rafting) to certainly more sedate activities such as taking afternoon tea on the terrace of the world famous and historic Victoria Falls hotel which will be your residence for these two nights. Included in your stay at the Falls is a 25 minute Helicopter ride for some memorable aerial shots as well as a guided tour of The Falls and a river cruise on the Zambezi River.
  • Day 3-6 Chobe
    +

The Chobe National Park is only a short transfer by road from Victoria Falls to Kasane to your 4* lodge on the banks of The Chobe River by around lunchtime. After you are settled into your room its time to do your first photo safari on The Chobe River in one of our state of the art Photo Boats. Each trip that you do on the river (and on land in the park) will be hosted by one of our photo guides who will be on hand to help you make the most of each of the photo opportunities that present themselves. If you dont have a DSLR camera then we will be happy to lend you one for the duration of your time in The Chobe free of charge as well as plenty of memory cards to take your images with you.

In total you will do four morning and four afternoon 3 hour photo safaris and we are confident that by the end you will not only be taking excellent photographs but you will have the confidence to make the most of all the photo opportunities that you encounter in the ret of this trip.

  • DAY 6 - 9
    +

On the 7th day you will leave your lodge in The Chobe to head to Kasane airport for the relatively short flight to Gaborone – The Capital of Botswana – where you will be met by one of the guides from Jaci’s Lodges in Madikwe.

This route from Kasane to Madikwe means that you do not waste a day in Johannesburg waiting to fly to your next destination and having left Kasane at lunchtime you should arrive in Madikwe (just across the border in South Africa) in time for the afternoon game drive in this fantastic reserve.

Madikwe is renowned for its predator sightings with good populations of Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog and Cheetah, the game viewing is very different to The Chobe offering different photo opportunities, the game drives are in open Land Rovers and Land Cruisers and you have the option to join one of their custom photo vehicles which are fitted with fixed camera mounts.

Your home during your time in Madikwe will be Jaci’s Tree Lodge which is not only one of our favourite lodges in the region but also home to The Terrapin Hide which is right in the middle of a waterhole next to the lodge and accessible 24/7 from a tunnel that leads back into the fence line. This hide is unique and was built by our very own Guts and is has been perfectly designed to get you eye level shots of the animals that frequent the waterhole during the day and night.

  • DAY 9 - 12
    +

After spending three nights in Madikwe its time to head east in the direction of what is probably the most famous game park in Africa – The Kruger and to the exclusive Sabi Sands Reserve.

Our lodge of choice in Sabi is Cheetah Plains, the sister lodge to Jaci’s in Madikwe so you can expect the same high standard of service, game viewing and food as you did in Madikwe. Cheetah Plains is set deep in Sabi Sands with a reputation for excellent game viewing especially of the Big Cats. The leopards of The Sabi are renowned for being some of the most relaxed and “photo friendly” in Africa and you are sure to have some excellent sightings.

During the day there is plenty of time for image review and editing so we would suggest maybe bringing a laptop with you as access to computers is limited. There is a great pool at Cheetah Plains to relax next to with a good book.

  • DAY 12 - 16
    +

    Day 12 – 16

Cape Town will probably be a bit of a culture shock initially after spending so much time in the bush but in no time you will realize why the Mother City tops the lists of favourite holiday destinations in all of the world’s top publications.

Not only is it staggeringly beautiful but its cosmopolitan lifestyle and breathtaking scenery will leave you wanting to return again and again. From the ever-present Table Mountain to the long sandy beaches and the vineyards to the distinctive architecture, this city is a photographer’s playground without compare.

While in Cape Town you will be based at the Grande Daddy Hotel and you will be hosted by our sister company Cape Town Photo Tours. Along with your photo guide you will spend three full days exploring the city and its surrounds in a private air-conditioned SUV (or minibus depending on groups size) taking in the sights and sounds of The Mother City. We visit all the must-see places but we try to do so as much as possible at the best times for photography and when we can avoid any crowds. This gives you a far more authentic experience of Cape Town – more from a local’s point of view if you like.

Our head office is based in Cape Town and the consultants who work there are always eager to share with you what’s going on during your visit. From the best restaurants to galleries and local events there is always plenty to do.

On the final day we will allocate you a chauffer driven vehicle and driver who will be on hand to take you to do any last minute sightseeing or even souvenir shopping before escorting you to Cape Town International for your homeward journey. That said however The Ultimate Photo Safari need not necessarily end there as the Garden route starts just outside Cape Town………
